Most of Japan is located in the northern temperate zone, which yields four distinct seasons. The best time to visit would be the climatically stable seasons of Spring and Autumn as the days are often clear with relatively low rainfall.
Spring (March to May)
One of the best time of the year to visit Japan. The temperatures are warm and comfortable, and there’s not too much rain. Spring is also the time when Japan’s famous cherry trees (sakura) come into bloom (March – April); their glory is brief, usually lasting only one week.
Summer (June to August)
Summer starts with a brief rainy season in June, which in some years brings daily downpours which can cause inconvenience but does not pose a significant barrier to travel. The summer months are generally hot and humid, with the blissful exception of Hokkaido in the North.
Autumn (September to November)
Autumn is a wonderful time in Japan with pleasant temperatures and fair days throughout. The beautiful autumn foliage is not a sight to be missed and is most beautiful towards the end of the season in mid-November.
Winter (December to February)
Big cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Kyoto generally experience short winters with cold sunny days and the occasional snow fall. Only in Northern Japan and along the Sea of Japan coast would there be high levels of snow – perfect conditions for winter sports. However, temperatures drop and the nights are known to be bitterly cold. The days are short, with sunset around 4:30pm daily. In some cities, winter illuminations are held which offer breath-taking views after dark.
